Before baby is born
"Most doula-client relationships begin a few months before the baby is due. During this period, they develop a relationship in which the mother feels free to ask questions, express her fears and concerns, and take an active role in creating a birth plan. Most doulas make themselves available to the mother by phone in order to respond to her questions or address any concerns that might arise during the course of the pregnancy. Doulas do not provide any type of medical care. However, they are knowledgeable in many medical aspects of labor and delivery. As such, they can help their clients gain a better understanding of the procedures and possible complications in late pregnancy or delivery." ~ American Pregnancy Association A birth doula provides phone and email support through the last months of pregnancy. Keeping in touch and feeling your mood, providing sources of information on decisions that may come up, being supportive through sudden and difficult changes in plans for the birth. |
Birth
When labor begins the birth doula suggests comfort techniques and strategies to cope. Gives a general map of what to expect with labor - helps to prepare for unexpected changes.
The birth doula joins you in early or active labor, in your home or at hospital based on your arrangement. The doula remains continuously with you, despite changes in hospital providers. She encourages you through the tough parts, suggests various non-medical methods to cope with labor and helps prepare and support you through any medical interventions you chose or are necessary. After the birth of your baby the birth doula typically remains for an hour or two until breastfeeding has begun if possible. |
After baby is born
After you go home from hospital the birth doula visits once or twice during the first month to check in with you, process the birth and help with all things baby and body. She may connect you to local resources depending on your needs and concerns.
If you chose to hire a postpartum doula or continue with a postpartum doula support package with your birth doula (if they provide this), the doula will visit you at your home and help with your recovery. From troubleshooting breastfeeding to helping with baby carriers, cooking nutritious meals and helping with sleep - a postpartum doula gently nurtures and supports you while you find your feet as parents, heal and process the birth. |
